NCVYS works with and supports a diverse network of voluntary and community youth organisations. We affiliate a wide range of national organisations working with young people, and local co-ordinating bodies and networks. Our network reflects the diverse range of organisations working with young people at community, local, regional and national level, from national organisations with a multi-million pound turnover that employ hundreds of professional workers to small community groups run on a shoestring by one or two volunteers. This page contains information on: To find out more about the diversity of the sector have a look at our recent mapping research of the children and young people's voluntary and community sector - Every Organisation Matters. Local voluntary youth networksLocal voluntary youth networks, or Councils for Voluntary Youth Services (CVYS's) as they are more commonly called, are the voice of youth organisations at ground level. They are co-ordinating bodies for voluntary youth organisations working at the local level, both local branches of larger national organisations like the Scouts and Guides and one off local youth projects. These networks are a vital part of NCVYS, acting as a crucial testing ground for innovative ideas and initiatives and providing informed opinion about the needs and desires of young people and voluntary youth organisations working at the local level. These networks perform some or all of the following functions: providing practical help; acting as a voice for voluntary youth sector work; setting and disseminating standards of good practice; acting as an interface with funders; providing co-ordinating and networking opportunities; and supporting the development of new and innovative work with young people.
National voluntary youth organisations (NVYOs)NVYOs differ greatly in size, number of members and purpose. All NVYOs, however, share one thing: they are concerned with the development, support and informal education of young people.
NVYOs often have their own local and regional structures, or they are federations or associations with affiliated local and regional groups or networks. NVYOs may be broad based organisations such as the Scout Association or they may be an umbrella body for those involved in similar activities or sharing a faith or culture, such as the National Federation of Young Farmers Clubs or the Methodist Association of Youth Clubs. NVYOs can be small (maybe supported by only one or two paid members of staff), or large with almost one hundred staff in a central headquarters.
NVYOs carry out one or more of the following functions: co-ordinating local groups; working directly with young people; representing young people; and providing national organisations with youth wings.
Regional voluntary youth networksNCVYS currently works with existing and emerging regional networks for voluntary youth services. These networks are at varying stages of development. This means that for the first time local voluntary and community youth organisations are eligible for membership. NCVYS is committed to working with these organisations to assess whether membership of our national network is appropriate before accepting their applications. If you are a local project interested in joining NCVYS, find out more about membership on our Join the NCVYS Network page.
