Influencing policy - serving young people well

One of NCVYS's key aims is to inform and influence policy that impacts on young people and the voluntary sector at a local, regional and national level.

NCVYS does this by providing policy information and analysis for its members on issues that affect young people and the organisations that work with them. It also works with its members to formulate policy positions on behalf of the voluntary and community youth sector, either proactively or in response to government consultations.

The current work areas include:

  • Education, employment and training

  • Youth justice

  • Volunteering and positive activities

  • Localism

  • Safeguarding and child protection

See the policy topics section for a full list of policy areas covered, to access briefing papers, consultation responses and position statements. See the resources page for case studies and research by NCVYS members which provide evidence of the impact and value of youth work and voluntary and community youth organisations.

The NCVYS team also runs various events and seminars on current policy issues.

Financial Monitoring Service

The NCVYS policy team produces a Financial Monitoring Service in response to ongoing information emerging around government spending and cuts.

Parliamentary work

On the parliamentary side, NCVYS is part of the secretariat to the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Youth Affairs

NCVYS has also produced a Parliamentary Guide to help members understand Parliamentary processes and opportunities to engage and influence policymaking.

In September 2012, on behalf of the Department for Education’s overarching strategic partnership, NCVYS published a Government Ministers briefing. It gives a full list of ministerial teams and portfolio responsibilities for the departments and ministers that are of most relevance to those working with children, young people and families and the voluntary, community and social enterprise sector. Children England has published a factsheet on Ministers at the Department for Education.

Overarching Strategic Partnership

NCVYS is a partner in the Department for Education (DfE)'s overarching strategic partnership. The partnership aims to support the evolving economy and infrastructure of the whole  voluntary, community and social enterprise sector serving children, young people and families. It is also funded to share the best practice, expertise, learning and concerns of the sector with the DfE in developing policy.

Led by Children England, in partnership with Community Matters, NCVYS, NAVCA, the Race Equality Foundation and the Social Enterprise UK, the partnership will use its extensive combined member networks and stakeholder groups to shape and deliver its programme, and to gather the perspectives of thousands of organisations and community groups.

Safer Future Communities Partnership

The Safer Future Communities project aims to support the voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) sectors to engage with the elected Police and Crime Commissioners.

The project is led by Clinks in partnership with NAVCA, WCVA, NCVYS and CWVYS and Drugscope and Women's Resource Centre.

Influential groups

NCVYS is represented on many influential groups. These include national and regional bodies:

  • Home Office - Stopping Young People Becoming Involved in Organised Crime Working Group
