Influencing policy - serving young people well

One of NCVYS's key aims is to inform and influence policy that impacts on young people and the voluntary sector at a local, regional and national level.

NCVYS does this by providing policy information and analysis for its members on issues that affect young people and the organisations that work with them. It also works with its members to formulate policy positions on behalf of the voluntary and community youth sector, either proactively or in response to government consultations.

The current work areas include:

  • Safeguarding and child protection

  • Education, employment and training

  • Youth justice

  • Volunteering and positive activities

  • Local strategic arrangements

See the policy topics section for a full list of policy areas covered, to access briefing papers, consultation responses and position statements. See the resources page for case studies and research by NCVYS members which provide evidence of the impact and value of youth work and voluntary and community youth organisations.

The NCVYS team also runs various events and seminars on current policy issues.

Financial Monitoring Service

The NCVYS policy team is producing a Financial Monitoring Service in response to the number of new details emerging around government spending and cuts, and we will continue this service until the Comprehensive Spending Review in Autumn 2010.

Parliamentary work

On the parliamentary side, NCVYS is part of the secretariat to the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Youth Affairs

NCVYS has also produced a Parliamentary Guide to help members understand Parliamentary processes and opportunities to engage and influence policymaking.

Speaking Out

As part of its strategic partnership project Speaking Out, delivered in partnership with Children England and funded by the Office of the Third Sector, NCVYS aims to develop closer links between a range of government departments and the voluntary and community sector in delivering cross-departmental initiatives.
