Save the Children’s campaign for a £3,000 Pupil Premium in England
Education should be a route out of poverty for disadvantaged children but at every stage in school the poorest pupils do worse and make less progress than their better-off classmates. The result is these pupils leave school without the necessary qualifications to move forward into university, training or well paid jobs and the cycle of poverty continues again. The money could pay for extra tuition, school trips, books and after school activities so each child gets the best opportunities to achieve better exam results and a chance to escape a life of poverty. Race Online 2012 NCVYS supports Race Online 2012, their ambition is to make the UK the first nation in the world where everyone can use the web. The UK has 40 million adult internet users, with 30 million people using the web every day. However, there are 10 million adults in the UK who have never used the internet – the combined size of the entire population of our five biggest cities. Four million of those are among the most disadvantaged. They are calling for urgent action to inspire, encourage and support millions more people online by the end of the Olympic year 2012 through partnership with government, industry, charities and individuals.
