Diocese of Derby, Church of England

The standards were used to create the core competencies expected of a volunteer youth leader in a Church of England setting e.g. used in a fellowship or a youth club.  Alistair Langton, Youth Adviser comments, “By using the NOS for youth work it gave you confidence that everything was covered and that the skills gained by the volunteer youth leader would be transferable and recognised by other bodies within the statutory and voluntary youth sector”.

Poole Youth Projects

The Manager of Poole Youth Projects, Simon Harwood uses the standards to assist him in the supervision process of staff.  He uses the standards both in supervision sessions and in the monitoring and supervision of those members of staff undertaking a variety of youth work courses from VRQ Level 2 upwards.  Simon comments, “All students are required to be supervised back in their field work placement/place of work as part of their youth work training.  Measures are required in order to monitor their progress and using the NOS provides you with a framework and makes sure that the general aspects of youth work are covered.  It makes sense to use the NOS in the supervision process when the courses students attend all use the NOS as a basis for their design.”

British Red Cross

The standards have been used to draw up a competency framework in order to help inform personal development plans for their youth work staff.

Methodist Association of Youth Clubs

The NOS for youth work was used as a basis for the Methodist Association of Youth Clubs to draw up their own set of standards for youth workers based across the UK who work in youth clubs associated with the Methodist Church.  Their own set of standards expanded further on spiritual development.

Frontier Youth Trust

The NOS is used by this national voluntary organisation in the design of youth work training courses making sure that learning outcomes match the NOS criteria.
