Open distance learningOpen and Distance Learning is increasingly becoming a popular way to learn and study. What is open and distance supported learning?
The Open University states that distance learning ‘means that you study on your own, either at home or wherever suits you. It’s ‘open’ because you learn in your own time 'reading, watching or listening to material supplied, doing course activities and assignments with regular support from your tutor’. Why is this type of learning popular?
There is not always a course available locally which matches people needs, particularly for those who live in rural areas.
People have lots of commitments, whether it be family or work and can find it easier to fit in open and distance learning in to their busy lives.
Students can learn at a time which suits them.Although assignment and assessment deadlines are set, students do have a high degree of autonomy about the rest of their study time.
Tutor support is provided by phone or via on-line methods and face to face tutorials are optional.
There is a vast range of courses to choose from and available at different levels.
There are opportunities to network and gain support from fellow students through a variety of methods whether it be regional groups, on-line communities etc.
Programmes of learning can be spread over a longer period of time, which help to spread the cost of the fees and lessens the impact of studying on the student’s home and work life.
