Speaking Out Briefing No. 5: Community Cohesion
Community cohesion continues to remain high on the government agenda, with a renewed focus on developing a set of ‘British’ values that all communities can ascribe to. There is persistent evidence that children from ethnic minority communities lag behind their peers in educational attainment and are over-represented in the criminal justice system.
This briefing: outlines key policy streams within the community cohesion strategy, including English language tuition, sport and volunteering opportunities; summarises relevant race relations, religious hatred and equality legislation; details key research findings on attitudes to being British amongst ethnic minority communities; and considers how the children’s voluntary and community sector can support children and young people from all communities.
